Prelude:
This interview is by TVBSG – a Taiwanese TV station. This is part of the promotion of the Meteor Rain CD. The host is Tao Zi and this is the second time she interviews Jerry.

To get everyone in the right mindset before you read on, let me explain the background as to why Jerry was very unhappy at the beginning of this interview. A reporter of this TV station had attempted to film him while he was eating off the set. He refused to be filmed and turned away from the camera but they still took the side-view of him eating. This clip was then played on their TV program. So he was unhappy that they filmed him during his private moments despite him refusing, and even aired it. Apparently, he was very direct when he spoke to the reporter and Tao Zi was told about this and she got worked up as she felt that there was nothing wrong for them to film artistes off the set.

Tao : Let’s welcome Xiao Bai Tu (Rabbit) Yan Cheng Xu (Jerry). A handsome man is now in our studio. Many fans have waited very long for you. Many people have been hoping that you would come to TVBSG. Before you came we were listening to your songs. Could you talk about your songs ? There are 2 songs, Track 2 and Track 7 right ? Wo Shi Zhen De Zhen De Hen Ai Ni and Ai Ding Ni or is it Yao Ding Ni. Oh. You have not signed my CD.

Jerry : En (and turns around and looks at his manager)

Tao : The CD is downstairs. It would be pity if it is incomplete. The other 3 have already signed on it. Jerry, would you like to talk about your singing and how you feel about recording your songs.

Jerry : En…Sigh..(Fidgeting)

Tao : What is wrong? Are you having gastric pain again ?

Jerry : Don’t feel well.

Tao : Don’t feel well ? Is it fun singing ?

Jerry : It is quite fun because I like to sing.

Tao : You like to sing. Vic said he is the fastest in recording the songs. What about you? Do you take a long time to record your song or have difficulty getting into the mood to sing ?

Jerry : En (nodding)

Tao : Does the producer use some ways to get you to sing love songs or get into the right mood to sing ? Like telling you stories ？

Jerry : Yes. He tells me to think about the scenes that I could associate with the song.

Tao : So what scenes do you think about ?

Jerry : mmm

Jerry : Think…I think of moments when I was with my past girlfriends.

Tao : Intimate moments ?

Jerry : Not intimate moments, but those that are sweet.

Tao : That will set you to sing with the correct mood right ? Jerry, are you not feeling well today ?

Jerry : Huh ? (Puts his hands down from his face)

Tao :  You are not feeling well?

Jerry : (Turning backwards) Just now….I don’t know how to say it.

Shows F4 jumping on the trampoline and Jerry injured as he somersault.

Jerry : I want to do the best in whatever I do. So it does not matter if I injure myself, as long as Sony (his record company) includes medical expenses in their budget.

Reporter : The 4 of them are fighting to be number one. Who do you think is No. 1 ?

Jerry : Mmmm. I think it is Ken. He is not very good in sports but he tries very hard to jump today.

Ken : I think it is me. I am enjoying myself. I just need to meet the director’s requirements and then I sit back comfortably. The 2 of them just keep competing.

Vanness : Jerry wants to jump better than me. I jump in a cool way. So ?

Reporter : Then who is the winner ?

Vic : The 2 of them are competing for number 2. The winner is ….

Vanness : Ken

Vic : Right. My jumping height – the lower I jump the higher marks I get. They all said that I jump very lightly

Back to the studio.

Tao : This is the same T-shirt that you wore in the music video. Actually before you came, many people faxed in to ask you some questions, like whether F4 is under a lot of stress after you became popular. I received a very long fax yesterday. She said she saw a man who looked a lot like you with another man who came in a motorbike to eat noodles. She asked if him if he was Jerry Yan but the man shook his head and finished up his noodles very quickly. She then told him that she wanted an autograph but he said “I am not” and quickly went away. Is it so pitiful ? You cannot even eat a bowl of noodles in peace.

Jerry : (smiling).

Tao : What are you smiling at ?

Jerry : Nothing.

Tao : Rabbit ! Are you Rabbit or Dinosaur (referring to Jerry’s nicknames) ?

Jerry : I am not both.

Tao : You have to pick one. Rabbit, OK ?

Jerry : (nods his head)

Tao : (clipping her hands) Bring the rabbit out. Cute rabbit. Luckily you chose rabbit.

Tao passes the rabbit ears to Jerry who puts it on.

Tao : Bring the dinosaur out. Isn’t it cute ?

Fans : Cute.

Tao : Of course ! You have to explain. Many people are mistaken that you have a bad temper but you are actually a rabbit right ?

Tao : Why do people say you are bad-tempered ?

Jerry : (laughs)

Tao : Quick, you have to say.

Jerry : Can you hear me with this thing on ?

Tao : I can hear.

Jerry : I said before….I admit that I often ……

Tao : It is so tiring (and takes off the headdress). What is it that you often…

Jerry : When my things are no good or for other reasons, I often will discuss with people. Perhaps I talk to people too directly. So I upset people unknowingly.

Tao : That is not your intention, is that what you mean ?

Jerry : I don’t know if it is called bad temper ?

Tao : Actually, it is not that you want to upset people, just the way you communicate.

Jerry:  I am the type who will speak my mind. Like if I make friends, I will tell them whether I like or dislike them directly.

Tao : It is pitiful to be your friends.

Jerry : But when I dislike someone, I will tell him why.

Tao : Maybe it is better not to tell the reasons. You already said you dislike him and then you tell him it is because his eyes are too small or he is unkind.

Jerry : No. I will not dislike a person because of his appearance. It is more of his work attitude.

Tao : I am just stating an example.

Jerry : If I don’t like a person’s work attitude, I will be nosey and tell him. So, my company’s staff says I am like a sergeant.

Tao : So you are ….

Jerry : There are many things that I cannot tolerate and will want to meddle with. Some people think I am longwinded or whatever….. Oh, just like company staff says…There is a Chinese saying that you are lenient with others but strict with yourself. They say I am strict with others and also strict with myself.

Tao : Those who understand please clap your hands (clapping). So, there is some language miscommunication right ? So do you think you need to change ?

Jerry : I suppose I should see a psychiatrist. Sometimes I feel that the pressure is so great. So great that ...

Tao interrupting : You should see a gynecologist first ! OK, see a psychiatrist first.

Jerry : Mmmm. I know people like me are easily disliked. I see correct and wrong very distinctly. Things are either right or wrong. I do not know how to strike a balance. I am stupid and this is something that I do not know how to do well. And I think there are things where I ….

Tao : (Sighing)

Jerry : Right.

Tao : Your future will not…..

Jerry : I know it will not be smooth

Tao : So you know it will not be smooth.

Jerry : Yes. I now look at it openly. If things carry on this way and people cannot accept me I will choose to leave the entertainment industry. I am prepared to leave. My character is very direct and I may have offended some people. But I am directing it at work and not at any individual, like when it is related to my CD or my TV serials…

Tao : I don’t want to pretend anymore. I must tell everyone honestly. Actually we both don’t feel good today (rolls her eyes and looks sideways at Jerry).

Jerry : Yes, I admit. I feel….

Tao (interrupting Jerry) asking fans : You do feel strange, right ? The atmosphere is not right. Do you know what is wrong ? I will tell you after the break.

Break.

Tao : Say, say, say, say. Reporters have called in to ask what is wrong and why the 2 of us do not seem to be speaking our mind. Jerry, you say first.

Jerry : I feel that….I am really afraid of the media now. Very often they will write bad things about my behavior. But I feel that I don’t have that intention or mean it that way. I don’t know how I should get along with the media.

Tao : You have finished ?

Jerry : En.

Tao : What happened is this. Just now……(in tears) I think everyone can see that our program is trying to do our best for our audience. We do try to understand how artistes feel. I suppose Jerry has some misunderstanding about the previous incident when we showed him eating backstage and think we are out to make things difficult for him. But I tell his manager that we are trying to film more of him for his fans. If he does not like it, we will not take his front view. And I remembered (when we screen it) I even said that some artistes did not like to be filmed and even gave examples. We are not trying to make things difficult for you. Our program does appreciate F4 for granting us interviews. We are also helping F4. Every time things happen, we will help to clear up the situations too. But Jerry’s friend saw our program and asked if we had bad intention. We don’t. Just now when our reporter wanted to film from the side, Jerry told him not to film. He said something harsh to our reporter who felt very hurt. And we are very upset as we want to show the audience something interesting and unique. But Jerry feels that he did not agree to the filming. So there is some misunderstanding. I think both parties are upset. Jerry is upset that we started filming before the actual show. We are upset because we feel that there is nothing wrong with filming. The reporter who was filming you is pitiful. He is not wanted and was almost in tears. He was just working and wants the best for both parties. Our program manager even asks if we are going to carry on with this interview because the atmosphere is strange. Do you understand our position ?

(Shows Jerry biting his lips and trying to suppress his tears)

Tao : Why would we want to harm or ridicule you ? Right ? I have said so much, now is your turn.

Jerry : I just want to do my best on screen. But I don’t know why people are always exaggerating my actions. For example when I played with Vic in private, and I played rough. This is very normal among men. But the media will exaggerate on this. I really don’t know what to do and I don’t understand why the media is so strict with me. Very often I don’t have any bad intention. I am so fearful of the press after all these reports about me.

Tao : You are very frustrated ?

Jerry : I don’t understand why the media writes such things about me and some of the words are….. A lot of fans write to me and encourage me. But I feel that I did not do the things that were reported. They make me out to be a very difficult person to get along with. But I don’t think I am. So I can only say that I am fearful of the media. I don’t know what I should do so that they will like me. If I don’t do well, they will criticize. Just like the incident of Fan Xiao Xuan (a Taiwanese female singer)…..

Tao : You and Fan Xiao Xuan…. ?

Jerry : No. She is so fearful of the media after bad reports on her that she refuses to meet them. I understand that feeling. So, I do not deliberately….I know your program treats F4 well. Since the last time I was interviewed by you….

Tao (interrupting) : We feel hurt. We already tried our best. Competition is tough and we want to do something different. So we rented clothes and props. But then we were told that we could not do many things. We are just trying to protect you. So it is strange that we seem to appear to be making things difficult for you.

Tao : Hello Taiwan. (this is probably a funny line from another show because Jerry and everyone laugh when hearing it). So do you understand ?

Jerry : I know.

Tao : I told Jerry during the break that we should speak our minds. He agreed, so we are telling all these now. So, do you understand ? Jian Hong (name of the reporter), come and hug him (Jerry gives a sort of dismay expression). I was angry just now when I heard these. I don’t know what you told him but I was thinking that we just wanted to do our best.

Jerry : I was still looking forward to come to your program yesterday…(Tao Zi hides her face behind a tissue)… I swear. If this is not what I thought, let me be knocked down by a car. Really.

Tao : Dao Ming Shi ! Rubbish.

Jerry : Maybe everyone thinks artistes in the entertainment line have to be a hypocrite and say things to please everyone. But I don’t agree. I will not pretend to be a good person in front of the media.

Tao : I think it does not mean that you have to be a hypocrite. It is manners and basic courtesy. Everyone’s job is difficult. I don’t mean that you are rude but that your tone is too direct and people will feel……. Is this alright ? Do you now understand our intention ?

Jerry: I know.

Tao : So, is the misunderstanding resolved ? You have to think that at my age, I still have to dress in basketball gear just for you. It is very tiring. The reporter is also pitiful. His wages is not high. He is doing what the producer tells him to do. We also know that artistes are also very pitiful. Is this alright ? Narration : Looks like Jerry is like a big child but he is also a big star. (Shows clip of Jerry modeling). Jerry says he is not suitable to be in the entertainment line. He got a lot of attention after joining the modeling contest. He became popular after acting as Dao Ming Shi in Meteor Garden. He stands out in the group F4 and has the most supporters but there have also been many bad press reports on him.

Jerry : But this is so far…

Tao : That is not counted. You yelled when I was shooting. We will watch other news first.

Tao : Yes, there is. (look at her hands)

Jerry : Tao Zi says she is going to bet the game with NTD $100,000 in US notes

Tao : That is our allowance for filming in Italy.

Jerry : After some persuasion by others, they have decided to use it to bet.

Jerry concentrating on aiming his ball and Tao Zi is moving around trying to distract him.

Jerry : Don’t play……

Tao Zi then starts singing a song in a funny tone.

The ball missed. And Jerry squats down laughing and bends his head while Tao Zi cheers.

Tao : The next ball is for your own reputation. I have 3 balls, you cannot just manage 2.

Jerry misses again.

Tao : 3 vs 2. What are you going to do ?

Jerry : We did not agree on what (losers) would do. Do we have American Dollars ?

Tao : (Throwing down some money on the floor where Jerry is standing) Jerry, this is your tip.

Then Tao Zi picks up the money and laughs.

Tao : We still have to play the shooting. Ugly girls, your turn now. Jerry, why are you staring at them ?

Jerry : Sorry. Girls dressed like that …..I did not notice them just now

Tao : You did not notice that they were seated behind you just now ? You are so focused…

They play and Jerry enters a ball and the game ends.

Tao : We are just having a short game. We really prepared some money but you did not win.

Jerry : Yes, Tao Zi really took out some money to bet.

Jerry : Actually I feel that I have changed after entering the entertainment industry. I love to exercise before and go outdoors. But now, with all the pressure, I have grown to be autistic and not happy.

Tao : You are really unhappy acting in Peach Girl ?

Jerry : No. I had discussed with Chai on this. Many fans have expressed on the web that they are worried about my health if I go on acting (without a rest)

Tao : Is the results of your health check out ?

Jerry : Yes, but I have not got it yet because I have been busy. I have to be there to see the results of the X-rays.

Tao : Is it the stomach ?

Jerry : Yes.

Tao : You still do not know if it is alright ?

Jerry : No.

Jerry : Yes.

Tao asking Jerry’s friend : Do you have a girlfriend ?

Jerry : He does not have.

Jerry : I just remembered. We were so pitiful on Valentine ’s Day. My staff and I had wanted to go to Kiki (a restaurant owned by Tao Zi). But we only had 500 dollars on us. So we could not go. We were so pitiful.

(Tao Zi participated in an ad for peach in Taiwan and it was reported that she will be giving some to  Vanness).

Tao : But we already plan to give to Vanness. You want it too ?

Jerry : Yes, I …both of us like to eat peaches.

Tao : OK. (and pretends to be a peach).

Tao : You don’t have to rush to another shooting now. We will tell everyone about a secret later on the filming of photos. Let’s watch the advertisements first.

Tao : I do not know you have talent in this area. Actually we were planning to play an act on “Fei Long Zai Tian” (this is a high rated period drama in Taiwan). But that is complex and the producer suggested that we act out “An Shi Ne Mei Hui”. Is this alright ?

Tao : We have an advertisement photo here and Jerry has agreed to let us show it. This is an ad for male skin-care. You may have seen it on websites. How long ago was this taken  ?

Jerry : About a year ago

Tao : So there was no agreement that the ad could only be used for a year ? They are now still using it.

Jerry : I am not sure

Tao : Do you go for facial ?

Jerry : No

Tao : You don’t take care of your skin ?

Jerry : Actually I dislike make-up.

Tao : But you probably don’t need to make up very much

Jerry : But my skin condition is not as good now. Because of filming. I often return home and go to bed without thoroughly cleansing off the make-up. So, it is not as good as before now.

Tao : Look at this promotion picture. What is the difference between the 4 of them ? Only Jerry lifted up his arms. And the joke is …can we tell ?

Jerry : Yes

Tao : The person who edited the photo cleaned up all the armpit hair. The producer looked at the final product and exclaimed : A man should have some hair ! Please return some hair to our Jerry.

Tao : Is this what you are really like ?

Jerry : They did edit it because it will look awful if they do not edit to remove it.

Tao : I heard they cleaned it all up

Jerry : Yes

Tao : Isn’t it strange that a man has no hair ?

Tao : Jerry seriously wants to answer some questions. Like there are some people who are anti-F4. And they say F4 has done an album, photo-book and concert within such a short time and is out to make money.  What do you have to say about this ?

Jerry : We feel hurt when we hear such comments. I do not know how to……I have some friends who download articles from the websites for me to read because I have no time to go online. I will explain to some of my closer friends.

Tao : Jerry is very hardworking. He told me just now that he thinks he does not sing well. I told him not to think that way. But he insisted that he really does not sing well and his singing is the worst amongst the 4. He would take note of the areas that he needs improvement in. I hear that you are taking some classes now ?

Jerry : Yes

Tao : In speaking.

Jerry : Yes, in speaking and breathing. They say the way I breathe when I talk is not correct.

Tao : Is it you or Vic ?

Jerry : It’s me

Jerry : We had a surprise when we heard Vic sang. He sang well and had that sentimental element. We did not expect that .

Tao : At the end of the show, we will play a MTV. We will be back.

Tao : We talk a lot to Jerry today, during the program as well as during the breaks. There is no big problem actually but we do not wish to have any miscommunication. Based on your looks, your future looks difficult. You have to work harder and try not to be too direct.

Jerry : Can I say something to the audience ? Many friends (fans) write to me and support me in a rational way. They will notice that I am different from what the media portray me to be. And some of them give me encouraging books. I am very happy that there are people who truly understand and support me. I would like to thank these people.
